Car Shakes At High Speeds
Here in Michigan we just braved through another blizzard we are so famous for. It seems every time we get a significant amount of snow, the next day people are calling the shop complaining Car Shakes at High Speeds. I tell them what I will tell you: It's probably the snow. When the roads are snow covered and winds are high, ice and snow gets packed into your wheels and suspension components. When any amount of weight is added to the inside of your wheels, it has the potential to throw off the balance of your tires. This can be why you're feeling your Car Shaking. Some options to fix this problem.
1. Find someplace warm to let your car thaw.
Some of us are fortunate enough to have a heated garage, or access to one. Let the vehicle sit in the warm area until all the snow is off the vehicle. This should thaw out any suspension components that are packed with ice and snow.
2. Take your car to a self service car wash.
If you aren't one of the fortunate ones, and you don't have a heated place to let your car warm up. Take it to a self service car wash where you can spray the undercarriage and clean the inside of your wheels. Usually the water is warm enough to melt, or at least loosen up the snow and ice that you have accumulated, taking care of your car shaking.
3. Get down and dirty
If none of the above are options for you, it's time to get your hands dirty. You need to physically remove the ice and snow from inside your wheels. Then look under the car in the area around your tires, and knock off any snow and ice from any suspension components you can see.
Every little penny saved is helpful these days, and this may save you quite a few. Today I had to charge a young lady $45 to do this exact repair. All we did was let the vehicle sit in the shop for an hour or so, and she was on her way. (and yes, I did let her in on this bit of info, but some folks don't like to get dirty) Just remember, before you take your car to the shop, get down and dirty, it may save you time, and most importantly some cold hard cash.
If your Car is still Shaking after this procedure, you may have a more serious issue.
